MADONNA OF THE ROCKS: Is a set of two paintings – the second a metamorphosis of the first. As the name suggests  it is a contemporary imagination on the theme of the Madonna & Child. In Renaissance art, many artists such as Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci, placed the Madonna & Child within a setting of a rocky landscapes as a backdrop. These two pieces use symbolic forms to depict an archetype of the human experience of the burgeoning soul & ego – connecting and striving toward a spiritual impulse whilst maintaining a grounding on earth. The large grey rocks represent the hardened materialism one needs to overcome. It is through many of my works that the Christ impulse transcends religiosity to become a human impulse – relatable to every human experience. That of striving, transforming, transcending and dwelling in the centre space of the heavens & earth.
